Math Narrative Assessment

Learner: Sanjana        Learning Coach: Mr Hattie              Date: 17 September 2015
Learning Area: Learning Habitat Two - Mathematics
Learning Observed
In Mathematics we are learning about subtraction and addition. We have started by getting the learners understanding what it means to add or subtract by using materials while working out the answer. Since then the we are moving onto using counting on to help us. This is where you say a number in your head and count on from that number. With this lesson Sanjana started out with just using the strategies that she knows. This is not a bad way of doing it but she needs to learn multiple strategies as she needs to be able choose the best strategy for the problem. We slowly went through the problems and with a few goes at using the strategy Sanjana was using the strategy successfully.
Evidence of learning

Sanjana was solving the problem and then we wrote down the number equation.
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Throughout this lesson the Key Competencies that Deesha was showing was “Thinking” as she tried and knew that she had to listen to the instructions again to make sure that she understands it. “Capability” was the vision principle that she was showing as Sanjana was developing her capabilities in math.
Next Learning Steps
Sanjana’s next learning steps are:
  • adding and subtracting numbers to 5 instantly.
  • applying the counting on strategy to higher numbers.

Math Narrative Assessment

Learner: Sanjana                 Learning Coach: Mr Hattie          Date: 9 September 2015
Learning Area: Mathematics
Learning Observed
For mathematics we are learning to subtract numbers to 5 using materials. This is the first step of subtracting. During the lesson we started with understanding what subtraction is and how we subtract. We went through a few problems together using our materials, our fingers. This allows us to manipulate the problem ourselves at our own pace. Sanjana was doing a good job. Our next step for this lesson was practicing using our capabilities that we learnt in a practical sense. We played our addition and subtraction board game, we only did the subtraction part. Sanjana kept quiet for the first few times. She seemed to be unsure of what she was doing. When we played the game she was the loudest one. Sanjana was very pleased that she understood the strategy and she was getting all her answers correct.

Key Competencies/Vision Principles
The Key Competencies that was being shown during this lesson is “thinking” as the learners are having to think about the skills that they have just learnt while applying them to a new game. “Relating to others” as the learners were put into pairs as we are wanting discussion around why they have gotten to the answer that they got. “Capable” is the key value that we were using as the learners had to use the capabilities that they had learnt in a practical sense.
Next Learning Steps
Sanjana’s next learning steps are:
  • using imaging to solve subtraction problems to 5.
  • instantly recognising basic facts to 5.
