Handwriting Narrative Assessment

Learner: Sanjana                     Learning Coach: Mr Hattie             Date: 12 October 2015
Learning Area: Learning Habitat 2 - Handwriting
Learning Observed
For literacy we have been focusing on handwriting every thursday. This was because we saw many learners struggling with writing or complaining about sore hands while writing. This can affect the amount of writing they are doing which could have an impact on their achievement in writing.  We were using the Casey the Caterpillar Handwriting Shapes to help the learner remember the correct formation. This has made some improvements to the amount the learners are writing as they are writing me fluidly. Sanjana has been writing her letters to small and it was hard to read some of the time. Now with this practice she is starting to use the correct sizing of her letters. She was excited to see how neat her writing was.
Evidence of learning
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
A Key Competencies that is being shown in this lesson is “understand language, symbols and text” as the learners are learning the correct formation of the letters. The Vision Principles that are being used are “Capabilities” as the learners are improving their writing capabilities and “Connecting” as they are learning the link between handwriting and writing full sentences.
Next Learning Steps
Sanjana’s next learning steps are:
  • writing all lowercase letters with correct formation.
  • writing all capital letters with correct formation.

Math Narrative Assessment

Learner: Sanjana        Learning Coach: Mr Hattie              Date: 17 September 2015
Learning Area: Learning Habitat Two - Mathematics
Learning Observed
In Mathematics we are learning about subtraction and addition. We have started by getting the learners understanding what it means to add or subtract by using materials while working out the answer. Since then the we are moving onto using counting on to help us. This is where you say a number in your head and count on from that number. With this lesson Sanjana started out with just using the strategies that she knows. This is not a bad way of doing it but she needs to learn multiple strategies as she needs to be able choose the best strategy for the problem. We slowly went through the problems and with a few goes at using the strategy Sanjana was using the strategy successfully.
Evidence of learning

Sanjana was solving the problem and then we wrote down the number equation.
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Throughout this lesson the Key Competencies that Deesha was showing was “Thinking” as she tried and knew that she had to listen to the instructions again to make sure that she understands it. “Capability” was the vision principle that she was showing as Sanjana was developing her capabilities in math.
Next Learning Steps
Sanjana’s next learning steps are:
  • adding and subtracting numbers to 5 instantly.
  • applying the counting on strategy to higher numbers.

Math Narrative Assessment

Learner: Sanjana                 Learning Coach: Mr Hattie          Date: 9 September 2015
Learning Area: Mathematics
Learning Observed
For mathematics we are learning to subtract numbers to 5 using materials. This is the first step of subtracting. During the lesson we started with understanding what subtraction is and how we subtract. We went through a few problems together using our materials, our fingers. This allows us to manipulate the problem ourselves at our own pace. Sanjana was doing a good job. Our next step for this lesson was practicing using our capabilities that we learnt in a practical sense. We played our addition and subtraction board game, we only did the subtraction part. Sanjana kept quiet for the first few times. She seemed to be unsure of what she was doing. When we played the game she was the loudest one. Sanjana was very pleased that she understood the strategy and she was getting all her answers correct.

Key Competencies/Vision Principles
The Key Competencies that was being shown during this lesson is “thinking” as the learners are having to think about the skills that they have just learnt while applying them to a new game. “Relating to others” as the learners were put into pairs as we are wanting discussion around why they have gotten to the answer that they got. “Capable” is the key value that we were using as the learners had to use the capabilities that they had learnt in a practical sense.
Next Learning Steps
Sanjana’s next learning steps are:
  • using imaging to solve subtraction problems to 5.
  • instantly recognising basic facts to 5.

Narrative Assessment - Term 2 Math

Learner: Sanjana           Learning Coach: Abby Morgan                   Date: 12 June 2015
Learning Area: Math
Learning Observed
During our Math workshops Sanjana has been developing her ability to add two groups of numbers together. Before beginning our new learning Sanjana was counting the objects from one to solve equations. As we have progressed she has developed new skills. Today during Math she was using beans and cups to solve equations using numbers to ten. Sanjana was able to place 5 beans in one cup and 3 beans in another. She then added the two numbers together by counting the biggest number from 1. As we completed more activities around this Sanjana was able to develop her speed in solving these equations.
Evidence of learning
Watch Sanjana solving 5+3 here.
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
During our Math workshops Sanjana has been developing her Capabilities as identified in the school vision principles. She has been advancing her mathematical capabilities and applying these to her learning. Sanjana has also been working on the Key Competencies of thinking. She has used effective mental strategies to solve new math problems.
Next Learning Steps
  • Develop instant recall of addition facts to 5 e.g. 4+1, 2+3, 2+3 etc.
  • Extend Sanjana’s ability to skip count in twos.

Term 2 Writing Narrative Assessment

Learner: Sanjana                   Learning Coach: Abby Morgan              Date: 26 May 2015
Learning Area: Literacy - Writing
Learning Observed
Part of our writing focus has been on adding more detail to our stories. We begin in a group and construct a piece of writing together before we then decide on what is important that we need to include in our success criteria (In order to be successful I need to include …). Sanjana was able to share her ideas about the important features we needed to include in our success criteria. She suggested that we had to have capital letters and full stops, and that is should include a sentence telling the reader what had happened. When Sanjana and I met to review her writing she showed me that she had met all of the success criteria. She had included capital letters, full stops, what, where, when, and how sentences. Sanjana is able to identify sounds she hears in unknown words and is beginning to extend her writing.
Evidence of learning
Great writing! Click on the Blog post below to hear from Sanjana.
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Sanjana is demonstrating her ability to develop the school vision principle of capable. She is eager to write during our literacy sessions and enjoys having the opportunity to share her stories. During this time Sanjana is meeting the Key Competencies of thinking, managing self, and using language, symbols, and texts. She is having to apply new knowledge with old and to recall past events Sanjana is using thinking skills. During literacy Sanjana is focused and is able to complete tasks set with a high level of care (Managing Self).
Next Learning Steps
  • Provide activities that target common words
  • Introduce Sanjana to different writing styles
  • Encourage Sanjana to publish her favourite pieces of work to her blog
